THE FIRST OPEN WINNER from Musselburgh, born June 30th 1833, was able to secure the title four times and came in as runner up four further times. His impact on the game in terms of course layouts, theory and material made him a main pillar in the development of modern golf. He was the winner of the first Open Championship belt at Prestwick.
He was challenger of Tom Morris, Allan Robertson, The Strath brothers, Ben Sayers, as well as Willie Dunn. The show matches played by these greats ,were the beginning of professional golf, here he stands out as the first Open champion.
